We make a B-line from the hostel to the Otogar(big bus station in Istanbul) and book our tickets for Sofia, it is a night bus leaving at 11pm and arriving at about 7am, perfect, and only 30 million(terkish lyra). Later that evening we head catch our bus, speading up the story here... we are on the bus and getting off when we are crossing the Turkey border into Bulgaria. We get off and when our passports are being collected this guy comes up to us and says, hey more Canadians! His name is Tristen and he is from Vancouver(well Surrey actually but I hate to judge). Now it is the 3 Canadians on their way to Sofia and it couldn't be the more perfect trioing.
We arrive at the hostel at about 8:30 in the morning and breakfast is being served, they are so awesome here, what a welcome. And so the journey begins, none of us having a great sleep on the bus, we head straight for the showers so that we can get out on the streets and see what the city is all about.
Cheap!! Let me tell you! It is great, want to be easy on the budget come here. Slices of pizza for the equizalent of about 60 cents. It is great and the city itself is also amazing! The people have a very cool east european flare. the city, still has a feel of what a communist country would have felt like with the fur hats and the weirdest thing of all and very hard to describe the feeling that it gave, Nazi memorabilia for sale in the market. Medals, cigarette holders and pins, very eery and creepy yet obviously not a huge problem cause there is a lot being sold in a very popular market of the city. Definately gives you an insight into the different part of the world that you are in. Is that wrong? It it just being able to own a peice of history or being part of a very bad memory or movement? None the less, it was one of the oddest experiences that I have had on my journeys so far, seeing peices of such a horrible peice of history, as well as things like blank KGB cards that are for sale.
So far Sofia has been pretty amazing and the 3 Canadians are having a great time, stopping in stores talking and laughing and well as being quieted in churches. The excitement of travelling is renewed and it can be from things as easy as meeting great new travel partners and friends. Stay in touch for more updates, just a little update and info on where I am now, Be well everyone, Cory |
